Embark on a tranquil escape at The Scribe’s Sanctuary—a haven for writers and artists seeking the inspiration of quiet contemplation and earth connection.  This quaint property is also suitable for nature lovers, contemplatives, mountain bikers, and those just needing a time to quiet their spirit.

The Scribe’s Sanctuary could be utilized for small writing groups, forest bathing retreats, and nature or travel writers.

This 200 year old cabin nestled on 13+ acres, and surrounded by many more undeveloped lands, melds rustic charm with more modern comforts.

Located just ¼ mile off of Route 33 on the side of Lydia Mountain, the space is far enough away to feel ensconced in the wilderness while also being within minutes of restaurants, wineries, breweries, antique shops, and pottery stores.

Meet the Owner

Hi, I am Karen!  Welcome to The Scribe’s Sanctuary.  I bought this property in 2021, and with the leadership of my partner, Steve, and the dedicated hands of friends and family, the cabin was transformed from a space that was primarily non-functional to an inviting, updated, charming space to welcome friends and strangers alike.

The decisions made in upgrading the cabin have been in keeping with creating as few environmental disturbances as possible.

Throughout my life, I have sought connection to nature as a way to calm my spirit, feel closer to divine energy, and remind me of my ‘place in the family of things’ to quote Mary Oliver’s Wild Geese.  Sitting in one of the rockers on the porch, walking into the woods behind the cabin, and driving up onto the SkyLine Drive, just minutes to the west, provides a level of appreciation for this wonderful planet that sooths me.  And I want to offer you the chance to experience this as well.

I have been a therapist, a writer, an artist, and an environmental activist across my lifetime.

I was born in the mountains of Virginia, and they have always brought me peace.

The Story

This cabin is purportedly 200 years old. It is built on a stone and beam foundation, and originally had no running water. The rustic charm has been maintained  by Karen, her partner, family and friends as they worked to update the cabin while maintaining its authentic roots. The history of the cabin includes the relocation of a citizen displaced by the development of the Skyline Drive, offering refuge and a place to call home.

It was purchased in 2021 by Karen Gill from Richmond, Virginia, a therapist, writer, and environmental activist. The preservation of natural habitat and species have been instrumental in leading the decisions around the care of this land, which includes 13+ acres.
